Dejima New Town Sustainable Master Plan

Dejima, Japan (1994)

Three Sites

The main goal of the project was to design communities that were sustainable; particularly in the area of energy. YSA produced a scheme that took full advantage of the Japanese cooperative lifestyle, by developing an aggregation of neighborhoods to form pedestrian villages. As the master planner, YSA participated as architect and urban designer on an interdisciplinary team of professionals including, environmental land planners, landscape architects, economists, sustainable energy engineers. The team's analysis revealed that the use of the automobile - in terms of trips - placed the highest demand on energy reserves.
